The Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly and all its member countries, are a collection of 17 Global Goals that aim to meet the urgent environmental, political and economic challenges faced by our world. The global development vision, “Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, lays out the Sustainable Development Goals with targets to help organise and streamline development actions for greater achievement of human well being, while leaving no one behind by 2030. The SDGs, with its 169 targets, are a universal call to action for poverty eradication, building a sustainable planet and safeguarding the global ecosystems on which humanity depends for its survival.

India is committed to achieve the SDGs and its associated targets for which purpose, the National Institution for Transforming India, has been entrusted with the responsibility of coordinating the efforts on SDGs with ministries and states, indicative of the “whole of government” approach. To spread awareness about the Goals, bring together stakeholders and build capacities for the realization of SDGs, NITI Aayog has organized several national and regional level consultations.

The SDG Action Awards aims to identify and celebrate outstanding initiatives that accelerate action towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Its goal is to encourage, promote and back the efforts of individuals and organisations working to make the world a better place as well as to encourage more and more people to innovate and find unique solutions to the various problems facing the world today. More importantly, it seeks to inform people that innovations, solutions and partnerships to device answers to the States’ development issues can be achieved by understanding and adopting the SDG principles.
The need for the SDGs has become all the more important in the light of the current global pandemic which has had devastating effects not only on people’s lives but also on our planet. The SDG Action Awards shine a positive light on things to highlight the creative and transformative initiatives of our citizens to accelerate change for people and the planet.
People and organizations across the state of Punjab are encouraged to submit their initiatives and nominate to become one of the SDG Action Award Winners. The winners will be awarded with a Memento and a Certificate from UNDP and the Government of Punjab. Their work shall be widely amplified on SDGCC Punjab’s social media platforms to inspire citizens to accelerate change for people and the planet.
